The Street Care Project is an initiative of StreetMed Inc. to provide first aid kits, solar powered torches, solar powered radios and a level of care to the homeless and at risk in Western Sydney.
Typically within our organisation and the clients we deal with at a street level we see a variety of injuries and wounds ranging from minimal right through the spectrum to requiring medical assistance. If our clients were equipped with early intervention measures such as first aid kits, their level of care would increase and the long term ramifications of infection and medical intervention would decrease. Currently as volunteers we have been sourcing first aid kits funded from our own pockets and the response we have received to the few we have handed out has been overwhelming. All the kits handed out to our clients to date also include a trained Medic explaining how all the items are correctly used and how to contact us for restocking as required.
From a street level point view there have been numerous stories where these basic kits have made a difference to a homeless person who has sustained an injury from whatever cause. From a personal point of view the first aid kits aren’t just about providing a level of comfort in obvious trying conditions, but what I have found with each and every kit I have given away there is not just gratefulness from the recipient, but an increased sense of dignity and self-worth. Something people on the streets very rarely have the opportunity to feel. Those in our society that are at risk or are homeless vary for numerous reasons. Some are there by choice, many are there by circumstance. Our mission at StreetMed and with the Street Care project is afford these amazing human beings the level of care and support afforded to so many others in our community. .
Donations to this cause will directly fund the purchase and distribution of First Aid kits and rechargeable torch radio’s to those in need.
Please dig deep – every dollar counts.
